The nearest decent beach to Xalapa is named Chachalacas, after annoyingly screechy birds in the area. I went with a group of my friends on Saturday. We left the bus station a little after 10, and finally got settled there at 1. So the ride was pretty long, but very cheap. The whole day ended up costing me less than $7 U.S. The strip of sand where we planted ourselves is in between the ocean and a fresh-water river. It was warm and pretty clean (the beach, I mean, not the water). There were more people trying to sell stuff than there are at nicer beaches, I hear. It was a good time. I don’t think I’ll go every weekend like some of the foreign students do, though. I’m realizing how many places I need to go while I’m in Mexico and how much money these things are going to cost me.
For example, I’m going to Veracruz this weekend to see Carnival! Well, Carnival is on Tuesday, but we have classes on Wednesday, so I’ll probably miss the actual day of Mardi Gras, but the whole weekend should be full of festivities.
