Student visas

I still don’t have a student visa. When I came into Mexico, I got a 180-day tourist visa, which will cover me for the entire time that I’m here. However, the school can’t legally acknowledge that I’m a student here (and therefore, can’t send my transcript to Bethel) if I don’t get a student visa. So I’m going to go ahead and do that.

The process to get a student visa is intense, even in Mexico. First of all, the pictures are very specific. No piercings or facial hair, forehead and ears must be showing, no smiling… they’re pretty flattering. Then, I have to gather up all of our documents: photocopies of EVERY page of our passport (mine are all blank, as this is a new passport for me), an addressed water or electric bill from my host family, a letter from my host family claiming my residence, an I.D. from a host parent, proof that I have money, a letter from the school, proof that I’m enrolled in classes, etc. And then I pay a thousand pesos (in at least two different installments).

I’ve gone into the migration office multiple times in the last few weeks. Hopefully soon I’ll finally be able to pick the thing up, only to return it when I leave the country in less than two months.

All of this is way easier than anything Mexicans have to do to get permission to travel to the U.S.

In other news, the time changed last night, so I'm back with Kansas.

It's SO hot here.
